Wamer takes home MAC Defensive Player of the Week honors

DeKALB – NIU women’s soccer freshman goalkeeper Deighton Wamer was named the Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday.

Warmer did not allow a goal in 135 minutes of action during last week’s games against the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Chicago State University.

Wamer made three saves in the first half on Sept. 12 in a game against the Wisconsin Badgers as the game went into halftime tied 0-0. Six days later, Wamer and the Huskies closed non-conference play with a 2-0 victory over the Chicago State Cougars on Sept. 18. Wamer made two saves in the game to earn her a second shutout of the year.

“We are proud of her efforts,” said NIU women’s soccer head coach Michael O’Neill. “It’s no surprise to me because she is a hard-working kid, a driven kid, always asking for more and I know there is more to come. I’m happy for her and excited to see where the season goes.”

For the season, Wamer ranks fourth in the MAC with 0.94 goals against average and fifth with a .769 save percentage.

Wamer and the Huskies will start conference play this weekend as they play Western Michigan at home at 7 p.m. Thursday. NIU will then play the University of Toledo at noon Sunday in Toledo, Ohio.
