Men’s soccer triumphs Cougars in Chicago

DeKALB – The Huskies went up against Chicago State University Thursday evening and came away with the win with a score of 3-1.

Huskies head coach Ryan Swan spoke of his team’s performance that led to them coming out with a victory.

“I like how our guys competed out there,” Swan said. “We continued to play well when the conditions got rough, created scoring opportunities, got some shots off and were able to score three goals tonight.”

The first half was all about defense as neither team was able to score until near the end of the period. The Huskies scored a goal right before halftime in the 43rd minute to take the lead, 1-0. The goal was scored by junior midfielder Diego Maynez to give him his first goal of the season.

The second opened up a bit more, seeing a total of three goals in the half alone. The Cougars put themselves right back into the game, tying the game 1-1 in the 58th minute with a goal by Cougars sophomore forward Niall-Reid Stephen. His score was assisted by sophomore forward Jethro Yumange.

A foul was committed by Cougars sophomore forward Shaquan Reid just a couple minutes later to give the Huskies a penalty shot that they capitalized on. The penalty to give the Huskies a 2-1 lead was scored by redshirt senior forward Enrique Banuelos at the end of the 60th minute.

Then, to put the game out of reach in the 72nd minute, fifth-year senior forward Miguel Maynez Jr. scored to give the Huskies a two-goal lead and a final score of 3-1.

The Huskies’ next game will be at 3:30 p.m. Sunday against Western Michigan University at home in DeKalb to cap off NIU’s Homecoming weekend. The game can be watched on NIU All-Access. Live statistics can be found on SIDEARM Sports.
