Perspective Letter

Rodney Davis needs three points against Central Connecticut Saturday to move into 14th place on the all-time men’s basketball scoring list. Davis, who passed the 1,000-point barrier against Florida International Feb. 4, would move past Terry Culp, who scored 1,008 career points for NIU.

With eight games left in the season, Davis would have to average 16 points per game to climb into NIU’s top-10 scoring charts. Former Huskie great Jim Bradley currently stands 10th with 1,134 points, while John Olson holds down the ninth spot with 1,137.

Four players on the women’s basketball team are scaling NIU’s women’s scoring charts. Junior Gena Stubbs scored 14 points Tuesday to move past Judy Weber into sixth place. The 5-foot-8 forward has scored 979 career points and will probably tally No. 1,000 at Marquette Saturday or at Detroit Feb. 17.

A group of sophomores also is moving up the list. Guard Lisa Foss is already NIU’s ninth-leading career scorer with 884 points. Center Carol Owens is 11th and forward Tammy Hinchee is 12th with 670 and 661 points, respectively. Owens and Hinchee are also elites in the rebounding category. With her 197 boards this season (468 career), Hinchee has jumped into the eighth rebounding spot while Owens follows her at ninth with 389.

The men’s gymnastics team will take its number-eight ranking up against Penn State Saturday at University Park, Penn. The Huskies are coming off consecutive NIU record-setting performances against Ohio State (279.80) and Southern Illinois (280).

Bobbie Cesarek’s women’s gymnasts will also be on the road this Saturday. The Huskies, 5-2, will face Illinois State, Illinois-Chicago and Illinois in the University of Illinois Classic.

After losing two dual meets last weekend, the NIU women’s tennis team will head to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Saturday to face Iowa and Texas Tech.
