By Northern Star Staff | October 12, 2010

The following was taken directly from area police and fire department records, or from the DeKalb County court records. Anyone mentioned is presumed innocent until proved guilty in a court of law.

  • At 2:40 a.m. Sunday, DeKalb Police observed a vehicle in the 1200 block of North Annie Glidden Road with no headlights on. After stopping the vehicle, police could smell alcohol on the driver's breath. The driver failed a sobriety test. Two other passengers in the car admitted to consuming alcoholic beverages while underage. Steven C. Tyrell, 19, Matthew J. Poppenger, 19, and Amber L. Sayles, 18, all of Sycamore, were charged with unlawful consumption of alcohol. Tyrell was also charged with driving with no headlights. An investigation was started on the incident.
  • At 2:57 a.m. Sunday, DeKalb Police observed a car in the 800 block of Ridge Drive had a smoking engine, smashed hood, broken windshield and broken front headlights. After the vehicle was stopped, police saw leaking coming from the car and both airbags had deployed. Police learned the driver had struck a vehicle earlier and fled the scene. The driver was found to have been driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI). Darryl D. McCollum, 33 of DeKalb, was arrested for DUI, DUI over .08, hit and run, improper lane usage and having no insurance. McCollum was sent to DeKalb County Jail pending bond.
  • At 10:47 p.m. Sunday, DeKalb Police observed a vehicle in the 400 block of West Taylor Street going 42 mph in a 30 mph zone. After a citation was given, the driver sped away. The officer who was still outside of their police vehicle, felt the driver came close to running over their foot. The officer caught up to the driver and saw them make a turn onto Third Street without using a signal. Kelly Rose M. Ortega, 24 of DeKalb, was arrested and charged with reckless driving, speeding and failure to turn. Ortega was sent to the DeKalb Police Department and later released on bond.

By Shaun Zinck | September 29, 2010

Bond has been set for a Bolingbrook man charged with invading a home in the first block of Daisy Avenue in Cortland Tuesday morning.

Robert Jackson, 24, is currently being held on $1 million bond at the DeKalb County Jail. He is charged with two counts of home invasion, two counts of armed violence, residential burglary, aggravated battery with a firearm and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon.

Police were called to the residence at 10:17 a.m. Tuesday after a reported armed home invasion had occurred, according to a Cortland Police press release. Witnesses provided a description of the suspect to police and said the suspect also fired a shot from a handgun while in the home. The release also said a 16-year-old male was taken to Kishwaukee Community Hospital, 1 Kish Hospital Drive, for non-life threatening injuries.

At 11 a.m. Sycamore Police and DeKalb County Sheriff Deputies took Jackson into custody in the field near Fenstermaker Road, the release said.

DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott said the investigation is still ongoing and they are looking for two other suspects alledgedly driving an older model, blue, four door Buick with Illinois Firefighter registration.

Scott said the handgun used in the home invasion was recovered around 5 p.m. Tuesday with the help of the NIU canine unit.

Jackson’s next court date is scheduled for Oct. 19.
