DeKALB – The NIU men’s soccer team had its season finale against Bowling Green State University Sunday evening that ended in a 6-0 loss.

It was a tough day for the Huskies as they were shut out by the Falcons. The Huskies had an early scoring opportunity before fifth-year senior forward Miguel Maynez’s shot on goal was stopped by Bowling Green junior goalkeeper Brendan Graves.

It wouldn’t be until the 20-minute mark that scoring opened up once Falcons senior midfielder Kale Nichols snuck one inside the post to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead early on.

Bowling Green extended its lead to two in the 35th minute off a penalty shot initially taken by Falcons senior midfielder Nathan Masters. The Falcons junior defender Joey Akpunonu was able to head it home to take a 2-0 lead.

Not too long after, Masters got a goal of his own in the 37th minute to give the Falcons a 3-0 lead going into halftime.

There was only more dominance by Bowling Green in the second half. Falcons senior midfielder Sergi Martinez scored back-to-back goals in the 61st and 67th minutes. Bowling Green freshman forward Trace Terry scored the final goal of the game in the 89th minute to give the Falcons a 6-0 win.

Martinez led the way for the Falcons finishing with two goals and two assists. Masters finished with a goal and an assist. Followed by Akpunonu and Nichols with a goal apiece.

NIU finished the season with a 5-8-4 overall record finishing 2-5-1 in the Mid-American Conference. The Huskies finished fourth in the conference standings out of five teams.
