DeKALB – A cloudy morning reflects the devastating news of Pajamas “PJ” the possum’s passing.

The beloved possum died Thursday after suffering from an unexpected illness the previous week.

Owners Sara Plettau and her partner Leah Zielinski announced Pajamas’ declining health on Instagram shortly after his hospitalization.

“We never thought this day would come so soon for a lively, loveable, energetic, and joyful possum, with no warning signs of his illness. Please pray for us and most of all, PJ,” Plettau said via an Instagram post.

After many treatments and hours in the hospital, Plettau Zielinski decided it was best to put PJ to rest. Though heartbreaking, Pajamas’ last day was reportedly filled with much love and treats from his caretakers.

“PJ’s last day was full of fun. Eating his favorite food, snuggling with his stuffies, being spoiled, and walking to his favorite spot at the park. He didn’t feel any pain in his final moments and when we said goodbye we gave him little clicks like possums do to say a final i love you,” Plettau said via an Instagram post.

PJ was well-known throughout the NIU community, and news of his passing prompted over 50 people to send their regards on the post. He is best known for his frequent walks in the MLK Commons which generated a large following on Instagram.

The possum’s Instagram was full of many wholesome pictures with his owners along with frequent posts of him sporting homemade crochet sweaters.

He often enjoyed staying active by playing with feather cat wands and running on his exercise wheel. PJ’s favorite foods consisted of Froot Loops and mozzarella as well as bugs on occasion.

On their latest Instagram story, Platteau and Zilinski posted a final goodbye in hopes that PJ has reached paradise.

“We love you Pajamas, go eat lots of bugs in heaven.”
