West’s NCAA Championships trip headlines this week in Huskie sports

Redshirt sophomore wrestler Blake West heads to Kansas City to compete in the NCAA Championships, and gymnastics takes a trip to Muncie, Indiana, for the MAC Championships this week in Huskie sports.

Redshirt sophomore Blake West was the sole Huskie to earn an automatic bid into the 2024 NCAA Championships after placing second at the MAC Championships on March 9. 

GYMNASTICS

With the regular season in the books, NIU gymnastics (9-13-1, 1-5 MAC) heads east to battle its six league rivals in the annual MAC Championships, hosted by Ball State University this year. The Huskies enter the conference title meet second-to-last in the league standings as they seek their second-ever MAC Championship.

After a date with the in-state rival Illinois State University Redbirds (8-9), NIU baseball (7-13, 4-2 MAC) will host the Miami University RedHawks (7-10, 2-4 MAC) in its first home series of the 2024 season. Following series wins over MAC rivals Ohio University and the University of Akron to open up conference play, the Huskies will look to continue their winning ways in DeKalb. The Huskies are currently tied with Western Michigan University and the University of Toledo for second place in the MAC.

NIU softball (7-15, 1-2 MAC) resumes MAC play with a road series against the University of Akron Zips (10-13, 2-1 MAC). The Huskies enter the weekend with a 1-2 MAC ledger after dropping the final two games of their MAC-opening series against Central Michigan University.

Sweeping both of their matches over the weekend against Judson University and University of Illinois Chicago, both in 7-0 wins, NIU men’s tennis (13-3, 2-1 MAC) returns home to continue MAC play against the University of Buffalo (4-8, 0-3 MAC) and the University of Toledo (7-8, 2-1 MAC).

Losing to Ball State in its first match against a MAC opponent, NIU women’s tennis (11-6, 0-1 MAC) returns home to continue conference play against the University of Miami (7-7) and the University of Western Michigan (9-5, 0-1 MAC).

NIU track and field returns to action for a two day invitational hosted by North Carolina State University. This will be the Huskies’ first event of the outdoor season and its first meet since Feb. 24.
