Men’s tennis’ MAC title quest begins this week in Huskie sports

NIU men’s tennis travels to the University of Toledo on April 20 in search of a MAC Championship title this week in Huskie sports.

MEN’S TENNIS

Saturday, April 20: at the University of Toledo, 1 p.m. CT

Toledo, Ohio / UT Varsity Tennis Courts/Shadow Valley Tennis Club

Ending the regular season as the number two team in the MAC after a loss to Western Michigan University (16-5, 8-2 MAC) to end the regular season, NIU men’s tennis (18-5, 7-3 MAC) will travel to Toledo for the MAC Championship Tournament, where they will take on the host school in the semifinals Saturday.

In an otherwise disappointing 1-3 week for NIU baseball (11-24, 6-9 MAC) last week, senior catcher/outfielder Colin Summerhill launched six home runs, including four in a three-game series loss to the University of Illinois. Summerhill is up to 15 home runs in 2024, good for first in the MAC and tied for the most in a single season in NIU history. 

After four road games last week, the Huskies return to DeKalb for four home games this week. NIU will first welcome the University of St. Thomas Tommies (13-14, 8-3 Summit League) on Tuesday before hosting the MAC-rival Kent State University Golden Flashes (16-17, 8-7 MAC) in a three-game series over the weekend.

Fresh off a series win over the University of Toledo during Senior Weekend, NIU softball (12-25, 5-10 MAC) heads back on the road to face the Broncos of Western Michigan (20-17, 9-5 MAC) for a Tuesday afternoon doubleheader. NIU has lost or split each of its past three season series against WMU.

The Huskies then return to DeKalb to host the Buffalo Bulls (12-23, 4-10 MAC) who own the MAC’s longest active losing streak at five games. NIU has taken four of its past six contests against Buffalo in DeKalb since 2018.

After a loss against the University of Toledo (14-5, 7-1 MAC) and a win at home against Bowling Green State University (7-13, 0-8 MAC), NIU women’s tennis (14-10, 3-5 MAC) rounds out the final weekend of the regular season at home against Ball State University (7-12, 3-3 MAC) before traveling to New York to face the University of Buffalo (16-9, 3-5 MAC). 

TRACK AND FIELD

Friday, April 19 and Saturday, April 20 at Michael Johnson Invitational 

Waco, Texas / Hart Track and Field Stadium

NIU track and field will travel to Waco, Texas, for a two-day invitational hosted by the University of Baylor. This will be the Huskies’ third visit to a Texas university this outdoor season. 

NIU is coming off a weekend where the Huskies were able to collect eight top-five finishes at the Cougar Classic hosted by Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. The 200-meter dash was the Huskies’ most notable event as they tallied three top-five finishes by junior Talayssia Sanders, senior Skylynn Blue and fifth-year Christine Irving. 

WOMEN’S GOLF

Sunday, April 21- Tuesday, April 23: at MAC Championship  

Grove City, Ohio / Pinnacle Golf Club

NIU women’s golf will compete in the MAC Championship. The tournament is an all-day event stretching from Sunday to Tuesday at Pinnacle Golf Club in Grove City, Ohio. 

The Huskies logged a third place finish at the Oral Robert’s Spring Invite. Senior Emily Romancew led the pack, finishing in third place. 

MEN’S GOLF

Friday, April 19 – Sunday, April 21: at Robert Kepler Intercollegiate 

Columbus, Ohio / Ohio State University Scarlet Course 

NIU men’s golf approaches its last tournament before the MAC Championship in the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate. The tournament is an all-day event and spans from Friday through Sunday in Columbus, Ohio. 

The Huskies finished their last tournament tying for eighth place at the Hawkeye Invitational. Junior Ben Sluzas led the Huskies, finishing in a tie for sixth-place.
