DeKALB – A primary election for DeKalb mayoral candidate Linh Nguyen has ended, with unofficial results released by the county clerk.
According to unofficial results, there were 365 Democratic votes and five blank votes.
To get on the ballot Nguyen needs 20 votes.
The primary election was triggered by Nguyen after a DeKalb resident challenged her candidacy late last year.
An electoral board decided to remove Nguyen from the ballot. Nguyen then appealed the decision in court but the case was terminated.
Nguyen was the only write-in candidate in the Democratic primary election. According to County Clerk Tasha Sims, election judges will determine which votes are valid by verifying that the oval is filled in, and the name written on the ballot is correctly identified as being for Nguyen.
On Thursday, an official count will be released verifying the number of votes.
“I am deeply humbled and incredibly grateful for the support from the DeKalb community,” Nguyen said. “And I am so encouraged to see this powerful commitment to the idea that our democratic government is stronger when all voices are included.”
The consolidated election will take place on April 1. DeKalb mayoral candidates include Cohen Barnes, John Walker, Linh Nguyen and Souami Sanan.
Early voting for the election will begin Friday, March 7.
