You may have seen it already. The ads on the TV start to become a little more festive. Multiple stores are changing their inventory from spooky Halloween decorations to ones that bring holiday cheer, and it’s not even Thanksgiving yet.
You may think “it’s too early for this kind of festivity” and chastise your friend for blasting Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” too many times, not even a day into November. However, I’d argue that while Thanksgiving needs its time to shine, it is never too early to celebrate Christmas.
While I can understand people’s opposition to celebrating Christmas early, as they may think we are just completely disregarding Thanksgiving, there is nothing wrong with wanting to feel a little holiday cheer early.
With 75% of Americans saying they like Christmas, it’s no wonder why people often hop into the feeling early. It’s the one holiday that really brings people together as a community. From the jolly feeling that Christmas music brings and the many memories you can make with your family or loved ones, whether that’s gift-giving or a Christmas dinner, there’s no wonder as to why people would want to evoke that kind of feeling a little earlier.
For me, Christmas evokes nostalgic childhood feelings of getting out of school for winter break and making gingerbread houses.
People don’t get into the Christmas feeling for no reason. Some people may need that kind of cheer. Christmas is associated with warm times and good memories of being with family and seeing the smiles on people’s faces when they open your gift.
You may not understand people who listen to Christmas music all year round, and that’s OK. There is no need to put down people who want to get into the Christmas season a little early, as it hurts no one.
So who cares if Thanksgiving hasn’t happened yet? Let those sleigh bells ring even before Dec. 25; it is never too early to feel holiday cheer.
