Coming off an undefeated weekend at the National Wrestling Coaches Association National Duals, No. 28-ranked redshirt junior wrestler Markel Baker has been named the Northern Star’s Huskie of the Week.
Starting off the weekend against Harvard University, Barker bested junior Coleman Nogle in a 19-4 tech fall. Baker then took a 15-4 major decision win over Central Michigan University redshirt junior and No. 33-ranked Andrew Austin.
In NIU’s loss to No. 8 South Dakota State, Baker was one of three victories for the Huskies after defeating redshirt freshman Cole Seaton in a 4-2 decision.
In the Huskies’ 53-0 sweep of Campbell University, Baker defeated graduate student Logan Heil in a 19-6 major decision.
In the third-place matchup, Baker rounded out the weekend with a 5-1 decision Drexel University redshirt senior Kyle Waterman.
This is the first Huskie of the Week honor for Baker and the first of the season for wrestling.
NIU wrestling returns to action at 7 p.m. Friday against Central Michigan University at Victor E. Court in the Convocation Center. Live stats will be updated on Track Wrestling.
The next Huskie of the Week will be announced on Jan. 19.
The Northern Star sports section’s Huskie of the Week is voted for on a weekly basis. Student-athletes considered for this week’s edition were selected based on their performance in competitions taking place from Jan. 5 to Jan. 11.
