DeKALB — A longtime staple of the DeKalb community, Tom and Jerry’s restaurant, 1670 DeKalb Ave., was damaged by a fire early Saturday morning. 

The restaurant has been in business for over 50 years and is widely known as a community favorite. 

According to a press release distributed by the Sycamore Fire Department, upon arrival heavy smoke was visible as the interior rapidly deteriorated.

Fire crews responded to the fire around 4 a.m. Saturday, according to officials, and remained on scene until 7 a.m.

The cause of the fire is not yet known and damages to the property are estimated to be $1.5 million. 

The owners of Tom and Jerry’s shared their reaction in a social media post. 

“We are absolutely heartbroken and also overwhelmed with all of the love and support,” the post reads. “Thankful for each and every one of you that has reached out.”

No injuries were reported among those associated with the restaurant, and it is unclear if the business is planning to rebuild at this time.
