DeKALB — The Student Government Association appointed a new senator on Friday.
SGA also approved a proposal allowing a liaison officer to attend senate meetings.
NEW SENATOR
Artur Kucharzyk, a first-year biochemistry major, ran for SGA senate to represent the College of Health and Human Sciences constituency.
Kucharzyk plans to hear out SGA’s ideas and help the senate during any challenges.
“I was thinking about hearing out other people’s ideas — what’s been the main issue going around campus — coming up with an idea of how to resolve it,” he said.
Kucharzyk was elected in a vote of 11-1.
LIAISON OFFICER AT MEETINGS
The senate agreed to allow a liaison officer to attend SGA meetings as a guest. An agreement was made between Senate Speaker Nathan Gonzalez, President David Rivera and NIU Chief of Police Jason John.
“We are seeking more collaboration to better serve the NIU student body,” Gonzalez said.
The proposal was approved unanimously via a show of hands.
SENATE BILL 57018
The senate voted to eliminate the sergeant-at-arms position, which was introduced to uphold rules of etiquette for the senate, enforcing decorum and a dress code.
Gonzalez explained why the position is now obsolete.
“There is no need for this position anymore as professionalism and competence standards for SGA senators and the senate chamber have become more elevated in the time it was initially introduced,” he said.
The bill passed in an 11-0 vote.
SENATE BILL 57019
The senate voted to standardize expectations and consequences for paid SGA officials. Among the requirements are a prerequisite of no academic probation, minimum state of Illinois requirements for the position and compliance with the NIU Student Code of Conduct.
The bill passed in an 11-0 vote.
There will not be a meeting next Friday due to a resolution passed at a meeting in November.
“There is no senate meeting for next week Friday,” Gonzalez said. “That was agreed upon in the resolution which approved all senate meeting times, dates and locations in the fall semester at the Nov. 7, 2025 meeting.”
The next SGA meeting will be held at 4:30 p.m. Feb. 27 in the Sky Room of the Holmes Student Center.
