The men’s soccer team rattled off it fifth straight win Tuesday against the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee Panthers, 2-1. The Huskies now stand at 7-2 on the season.

The team overcame an early deficit after the Panthers stormed out of the gate and scored in minute-11 following a flurry of chances at the Huskies’ net.

“The first 10 minutes, [Milwaukee] came out really fast and dictated the tempo of the game,” Head Coach Ryan Swan said. “After they scored, things started to settle down, and we were able to get on the ball more. After their goal, I thought we were very good, but that first 10 or 15 minutes we had our backs to the wall. They certainly dominated the early exchanges.”

Redshirt junior goalkeeper Konrad Dziedzic held NIU in the game in the early going while the team found its legs, recording four saves in the game.

“[Dziedzic] had to come up with a couple good saves,” Swan said. “They had a couple more shots that were off target, but I do remember one, in particular, really good save he had to make.”

The Huskies answered the goal against from the first half with a pair of their own in the second half.

Junior midfielder Irvin Dominguez opened the scoring for NIU in minute-48 and first year defender Anthony Markanich followed up in minute-64. Both goals were set up by junior forward Jan Maertins.

“For Dominguez’s goal, there was a nice combination where Maertins got in to the end line and cut it back for Dominguez with a one-time finish,” Swan said. “The second goal was a great piece of skill from [senior midfielder Kevin Rodriguez] down the right hand side. He gave a great cross [to Jan] and instead of trying to finish it himself, Jan saw a better option to play it on to Anthony, who smashed it in. Great plays from Jan on both occasions, and it shows he’s a forward who’s willing to do whatever to get the goals, whether it’s him scoring or his teammates.”

The Huskies unleashed 16 shots in the game with eight on goal, compared to 16 from Milwaukee, five on target.

The match had 33 fouls, 18 belonging to NIU, and the two teams split six yellow cards evenly.

The Huskies have a game 9 p.m. Friday in Oregon where they will take on the No. 13 ranked University of Portland Pilots. Streaming information will be available on the NIU Athletics website.
