Love free things? Check out free MMA fight

If you’re like me, you love free things.

If you’re also like me, you love watching MMA events. When you combine the two things together, it’s a very good experience. MMA events on Pay-per view, specifically that of UFC, are usually around $60. It’s good to go to a local establishment and watch it there, but if you can avoid paying any amount of money and watch an event on the couch, that’s the ideal situation.

The UFC has bounced around its live television events numerous times, however. Starting on SPIKE just a few years ago, owner Dana White finally landed the big fish contract with FOX entertainment. Having aired a few events through the standard fox channel and FX, the two companies have once again swapped channels and the live events have been moved to the brand new channel Fox Sports 1.

With one event already under its belt on that channel on August 17th, UFC is back again on Wednesday the 28th.

This upcoming card has the chance to provide a great headlining fight, as well as offering a main card consisting of many up and comers and a few veterans looking to work their way back up the ladder into title contention.

Let’s start with the first slated match-up on the main card, Brad Tavares versus Robert “Bubba” McDaniel. Tavares is only 25, and McDaniel not much older at 30, but McDaniel holds a numbers advantage in terms of overall fights. Tavares was a competitor on season 11 of the Ultimate Fighter, losing to Court McGee in the semi-finals.

Despite McDaniel’s opponents not being the highest caliber, he is riding a seven fight winning streak and carries a good submission game as evidenced by his 16 career submission victories. Tavares comes in winner of his last three in a row though no one of high notoriety. I give the edge to McDaniel and predict a three round unanimous decision.

The next match-up is in the second lightest weight class offered by the UFC. Takeya Mizugaki takes on Erik Perez in a big step up for Perez in competition level.

Mizugaki has fought some top-shelf opponents, including Urijah Faber, Miguel Torres, Rani Yahya, Jeff Curran, and Scott Jorgensen. Perez is on an eight fight winning streak and a win over Mizugaki will put the first stamp on his UFC resume. I think that Perez takes this via TKO, with an aggressive approach.

In another match-up that features Ultimate Fighter alum, season 11 winner Court McGee will square off against Ultimate Fighter: Smashes season 1 winner Robert Whittaker.

McGee comes in without a stoppage victory in nearly three years. His last contest being a win over the grizzled vet Josh Neer, McGee is probably one of the best stories in combative sports. A former drug addict, McGee turned his life around through martial arts. Whittaker comes in with just two losses to his record, but has faced little in the way of opponents worthy of name-dropping.

I give this fight to McGee and I think he earns his first stoppage victory in a while with a rear-naked choke in the second or third round.

In a showcase of up and coming fighters, Bryan Melacon will take on Ultimate Fighter season 17 winner Kelvin Gastelum. Gastelum won the contest against the much hyped Uriah Hall on that season, utilizing will-power and some wrestling skill. Melacon has toured the professional levels of MMA in just nine fights, having fought in Bellator and Strikeforce before Strikeforce was absorbed by the UFC. Melacon is coming off of a vicious knock-out of another Ultimate Fighter alum Seth Baczynski. Despite Gastelum’s success on TUF, I give the nod to Melacon for his aggression and predict a TKO in the first or second round.

In what could be a great display of overall MMA, the co-main event features two seasoned veterans in terms of experience in former WEC champion Donald Cerrone and winner of his last four fights Rafael Dos Anjos.

Both Cerrone and Dos Anjos possess sterling ground games, although Cerrone likes to get into stand-up scraps as well. Dos Anjos is still the only person I have seen attempt a leg compression submission, as he did back in 2009 in a loss to Tyson Griffin. I think that given Dos Anjos last four victories, including wins over top grappler Mark Bocek, top striker Anthony Njokuani, and a former top contender in Evan Dunham, he stands a great chance to defeat “The Cowboy”.

Cerrone is coming off a victory over KJ Noons, which hardly says much, but is still an all-around threat to Dos Anjos.

I give Dos Anjos the edge and see it being a decision, with Cerrone having the ability to escape possible decisions.

In the main event of the card, a rematch between former title challengers will look to propel one fighter back into contention. Carlos Condit will take on Martin Kampmann.

With both men coming off a loss to Johnny Hendriks in their most recent fights, both fighters are eager to get back into the win column. Kampmann suffered the worst, getting knocked out in the first round. This will be Kampmann’s first trip back to the ring since November of last year. Despite Kampmann winning the first time these two met, I see Condit coming in very aggressive and looking to pressure “The Hitman”. Kampmann has been very susceptible to an aggressive approach and has paid the consequences of that in fights past.

With both fighters having great ground games, good striking, and probably even endurance, I still have to give the edge to Condit. I think Condit gets a TKO in the second or third round.

While the free card isn’t the most stacked, it provides a great viewing of some up and coming fighters and also a very significant match-up for welterweight championship contention.
