An NIU student has been charged with several counts of domestic battery stemming from a domestic dispute on Aug. 25.

Ronald J. Young, 24, of Chicago, has been charged with one count of aggravated domestic battery, which is a class A felony, two counts of regular domestic battery and one count of aggravated assault, both of which are class A misdemeanors.

Assistant State’s Attorney Randy Yedinak said Young could face up to seven years in prison followed by four years of probation.

The dispute took place in the 1000 block of Crane Drive. Allegedly, Young and a woman got into a domestic dispute in a parking lot. Young allegedly then threatened the victim with a gun and choked her.

The victim later reported the incident and within hours Young was arrested by NIU Police in the 800 block of Crane Drive. DeKalb Police Lt. Gary Spangler said Young did not resist arrest.

Young appeared in court Aug. 31 in an attempt to have his current bond of $50,000 lowered to $10,000. Of that amount he would have been required to pay 10 percent to be released from jail. Due to the severity of his charges, Circuit Court Judge Robbin Stuckert denied the request.

Young’s next scheduled court appearance is Sept. 28.
