Tails pet of the week: Rusty and Nona

By Elisa Reamer

DeKALBThe Tails Humane Society’s Pets of the Week for March 22 are 9 and 12-year-old domestic shorthair mix cats. Rusty is a male and Nona is a female that must be adopted together. The cats are well trained and use their litter boxes.

Rusty is shy at first and requires people to be patient with him as he gets spooked easily, said Lexi Cannon, a Tails Humane Society employee.

Nona is a more shy cat and has a hard time trusting people. She loves head and butt scratches, but does not like being carried around, Cannon said. Nona is shy around small children.

Nona has an amazing purr motor, which sometimes gets going even before the petting starts. Both cats adore snuggling on cat beds and getting snacks. The two cats are also best of friends and have supported one another through the sadness of their person’s death.

The two have been at the shelter since February but had to be quarantined due to an upper respiratory infection. They are now doing better and ready to go home, Cannon said.

“We are open to the public from noon to 7 p.m. on weekdays and noon to 5:30 p.m. on weekends, so they can just come in and take a look around,” Cannon said. “They can ask the front desk who they’re wanting to see and we can get them situated into a visiting room and let them hang out with them and get to know them a little bit.”
