DeKALB – NIU men’s soccer’s (4-4-4, 1-2-1 MAC) conference matchup against the University of Western Michigan Broncos (9-1-1) (3-0-1) ended in a draw at home on Sunday afternoon.

The Huskies and the Broncos didn’t see any goals in the first half. WMU had many opportunities to score as they took six shots compared to NIU’s two, but they couldn’t capitalize on shot attempts.

Redshirt senior goalkeeper Martin Sanchez played a role with the Broncos not scoring with his three saves.

“Martin has been an outstanding goalkeeper for us for four years,” head coach Ryan Swan said. “We know he has big saves in him, but he had a great game today.”

Huskies looked for a shot at the 36-minute mark with time dwindling in the first half. Junior midfielder Patrick Coleman had a look for a shot but overshot the goal from the bottom left.

Both teams went scoreless in the second half.

The Broncos couldn’t make the most of their shot attempts as they took 11 shots in the second half. WMU finished the game with 17 shots.

Huskies only attempted one shot in the second half, which freshman midfielder Angel Rodriguez took.

Senior defender Adrian Lara talked about his biggest takeaway from today’s game.

“We need to get locked in when it comes to games like these,” said Lara. “It been games where we shied away from battles and lost matchup.”

The game ended in a scoreless draw 0-0.

Despite the stalemate, Sanchez had six saves.

“I’m always happy to get a clean sheet, but my defenders played will too as they had great saves as well,” Sanchez said. “This was a team effort, and we played well from top to bottom.”

NIU sits in third place in the Mid-American Conference, while WMU stays in first place.

NIU will remain at home as they are set for action at 7 p.m. on Wednesday against the Northwestern University Wildcats. The game will be available on NIU Athletics.
