DeKALB – Senior guard Chelby Koker has become the first NIU women’s basketball player to earn Huskie of the Week honors, two days after NIU’s 86-79 defeat of the DePaul University Blue Demons on Saturday.

Koker headed up NIU’s scoring efforts as the Huskies beat the Blue Demons for the first time since the 1994 season. The Racine, Wisconsin, native had 24 points on the day, 18 of those points being the result of 9-for-15 shooting from the field.

Saturday marked Koker’s first regular season home outing since tearing her ACL in a game against Kent State University on Jan. 26. Koker is currently tied with graduate guard Janae Poisson for the team lead in points. Each player has 30 points after two games. Koker is also even with junior guard Jayden Marable with a team-high three-point shooting percentage of .667.

Koker and the Huskies will return to action at 11 a.m. Tuesday. NIU will play host to the University of Southern Indiana at the Convocation Center.

Next week’s Huskie of the Week will be announced Nov. 21.

The Huskie of the Week is voted for on a weekly basis by sports writers at the Northern Star. Student-athletes considered for this week’s edition were chosen based on their performance in competitions taking place from Nov. 7 to Nov. 13.
