This Week in Huskie Sports: Feb. 20, 2023

DeKALB – NIU sports prepares for another jam-packed week, headlined by NIU men’s basketball taking on Ohio University Tuesday. 

HOCKEY

Friday, Feb. 24: vs. McKendree University, 4:30 p.m. 

Fremont, Neb. / Sidner Ice Arena

 

NIU hockey enters the Midwest College Hockey playoffs as the No. 6 seed, taking on No. 3 seed McKendree University in the quarterfinals. The Huskies’ lone conference win came against McKendree on Dec. 3 by a final score of 5-3. McKendree won the season series against NIU, taking three of the four matchups by final scores of 6-1, 6-3 and 8-0. The Huskies meet the Bearcats at 4:30 p.m. at Sidner Ice Arena in Fremont, Nebraska. 

MEN’S BASKETBALL 

Tuesday, Feb. 21: vs. Ohio University, 6 p.m.

Athens, Ohio / Convocation Center

Saturday, Feb. 25: vs. Central Michigan University, 3:30 p.m.

Mount Pleasant, Mich. / McGuirk Arena

 

NIU men’s basketball plays its final two road games of the regular season this week. Tuesday will be a big game for both NIU and Ohio University, as the two teams sit in a fifth place tie in the Mid-American Conference standings. Ohio holds a 12-1 record at home this season. Saturday, the Huskies will look for the season sweep of Central Michigan University. The Chippewa’s come into the week in eighth place in the Mid-American Conference standings. Both games will be streamed on ESPN3/ESPN+. 

TRACK AND FIELD

Friday Feb. 24 and Saturday Feb. 25

Bowling Green, Ohio / Perry Fieldhouse

 

NIU women’s track and field will close their indoor season by competing in Bowling Green, Ohio at the MAC Indoor Championships. Junior Scout Regular will look to continue her impressive season in the 60-meter hurdles on the MAC’s biggest stage. 

 

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Friday, Feb. 24: at University of South Dakota, 11 a.m. 

Sioux Falls, South Dakota / Huether Family Match Pointe

Sunday, Feb. 26: at The University of St. Thomas, 10 a.m.

Bloomington, Minnesota / Life Time 98th Street

Sunday, Feb 26: at Winona State University 4 p.m.

On Friday, NIU women’s tennis heads to South Dakota to take on the University of South Dakota (1-5). The Huskies will then travel to Minnesota on Sunday to face off against both Winona State University (1-0) and the University of St. Thomas (0-3). The Huskies are sitting at 4-6, coming off a loss at Illinois State University. NIU will be looking to bounce back and bring the Huskies record back to .500. 

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Wednesday, Feb. 22: at Miami University of Ohio, 6 p.m.

Oxford, Ohio / Millett Hall

Saturday Feb. 25: vs. Central Michigan University 1 p.m. 

DeKalb, Ill / Convocation Center 

 

Sitting at 13-11, on Wednesday the NIU women’s basketball team heads to Ohio, to take on Miami University (9-17). The Huskies will then stay home, facing off against Central Michigan (6-18). NIU, coming off of a 85-81 win against Bowling Green State University (22-3) look to keep pushing and add on two more wins. 

 

GYMNASTICS 

Sunday, Feb. 26: vs. Lindenwood University, 1 p.m. 

St. Charles, MO. / Robert F. Hyland Arena

NIU gymnastics will be on the road to take on the Lindenwood Lions. The Huskies are 1-3 on the road and are 6-3 against the Lions overall since 2015.

 

BASEBALL

Friday, Feb. 24: vs. Monmouth University, 1 p.m.

Saturday, Feb. 25: vs. Penn State University, 11 a.m.

NIU baseball heads to North Carolina for a busy weekend, in which they play four games in the Penn State Tournament. Friday, NIU takes on Monmouth University, which is coming off of a 24-27 record last season. Saturday is a double-header vs. Penn State University, which posted a 26-29 record last year. The Huskies wrap up the weekend on Sunday against the University of Maine, which put up a 27-22 record last year. This is the first time in school history that NIU will play Monmouth and Penn State in baseball. It will be the first time since 2007 that the Huskies take on Maine.

NIU softball heads to Virginia to play five games in the Liberty Tournament, hosted by Liberty University. The Huskies will look to improve upon their 1-4 record in the San Diego State tournament earlier this season. NIU will take on Marshall University (3-1) and Liberty (1-6) on Friday. Saturday is a double-header vs. Elon University, which holds a 1-4 record. Princeton University kicks off their season this weekend.
