Huskies extinguish Flames for third straight year

DeKALB – The doubles duo of juniors Cheng En Tsai and Mikael Vollbach continued their dominant season with their seventh straight win at No. 1 Wednesday.

The Huskies defeated the University of Illinois Chicago 4-3 Wednesday afternoon, marking NIU’s third straight victory over UIC and third straight win overall.

En Tsai and Vollbach started the day off with a win for the Huskies, defeating freshman Jai Vallurupalli and graduate student Miroslav Cvjetan of UIC by a score of 6-3. Senior Oliver Valentinsson and freshman Iker Gaztambide Arrastia followed with a 6-1 win over  sophomore Ammar Wazir and senior Aleksa Bucan at No. 3, clinching the doubles point for the Huskies. Valentinsson and Arrastia’s victory was their fourth consecutive win as a duo.

Vollbach continued his impressive performance into the singles round, winning at No. 2 against graduate student Pelle Strandberg. Valentinsson defeated Vallurupalli at No. 3 with 6-0, 6-4 victories, marking his third consecutive win. 

Gaztambide Arrastia clinched the win for the Huskies with a No. 5 victory over junior Gustavo Schwebel.

The Huskies will face Lipscomb University next at 1 p.m. on March 3 in Nashville, Tennessee.
