The NIU lacrosse club finished off its fall season last weekend with a 10-4 victory over the Hoosiers of Indiana University.

Despite the frigid conditions, the Huskie stickmen prevailed, putting on an exhibition in possession offense.

“Ball control was certainly a key factor in our victory,” coach/captain Bill Polasky said.

“We were able to set the tempo of the game to our liking,” Polasky said.

“Our passing was very effective.”

ich Fantozzi and Matt Hiller combined for seven goals on the day. Hiller, who posted 26 goals for the season, was elected co-most valuable player by his teammates.

Sophomore goalie Rob Jawor was the other MVP. His outstanding defensive play was essential to this semester’s winning record.

Last Sunday’s match was also the final game for senior starting midfielder Jason Dickow, who tallied two assists on the day.

“It’s kind of a wierd feeling,” Dickow said. “We have a great group of guys. I’m kind of sad I’m leaving,” he said.

“I had a good season,” Dickow said. “We had a great season. We didn’t really know what to expect,” he said.

We lost 12 or 13 starters from last year. We tried a couple of different lines,” Dickow continued. “As the season progressed, we got better. We took our losses, but we took our wins.”

Jack O’Toole led the ferocious defensive effort this weekend. Along with fellow defenseman Paul Michaels and Matt Crawford, he anchored a man-down unit.

They did not give up a single goal for any of NIU’s seven minutes of penalties.

The heart of the squad’s midfield showed great improvement, as over half the goals scored occurred when underclassmen John Slayton, Jim Long, Paul Anthony, Brian Prodoenl, Brenda Klein or Will Ralph were on the field.

Although this weekend’s game marked the first time NIU and Indiana met, the Huskies posted a 3-3 record against Big Ten schools this year.
