This Week in Huskie Sports: Feb. 27 to March 5

DeKALB –NIU kicks off a big week of sports Monday, with men’s basketball fighting for seeding in the MAC tournament and women’s basketball looking to clinch a spot in the MAC tournament this week.  

MEN’S BASKETBALL 

Tuesday, Feb. 28: vs. University at Buffalo, 7 p.m.

DeKalb, Ill. / Convocation Center

Friday, Mar. 3: vs. Eastern Michigan University, 7 p.m.

DeKalb, Ill. / Convocation Center

NIU men’s basketball wraps up its regular season with two home games this week. Heading into the final two games, NIU sits at 12-17 good for sixth in the MAC. NIU holds an 8-8 conference record, while Buffalo has a 7-9 conference record. Tuesday’s game will be impactful in determining seeding for the upcoming MAC tournament. The Huskies will look for the season-sweep of Eastern Michigan Friday, as they defeated Eastern Michigan 88-67 on Jan. 21. NIU is seeking two wins heading into the tournament. 

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Saturday, March 4: vs. Drake University, 10 a.m.

Saturday, March 4: vs. University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, 2 p.m.

The NIU women’s tennis team heads home for a doubleheader facing off against Drake University at 10 a.m. and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at 2 p.m. The Huskies sitting at 7-6, look to add onto their three game winning streak. Despite injuries to the Huskies no.1 duo, freshman Nataly Ninova clinched the 7-0 victory over Western Illinois University. NIU went on to defeat Cardinal Stritch University 7-0. The Huskies look to keep the win streak going, bringing NIU to three games over .500. 

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Wednesday, March 1: vs. Eastern Michigan University, 6 p.m. 

DeKalb, Ill. / Convocation Center

Saturday, March 4: vs. Ken State University

Kent, OH / Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center

NIU women’s basketball looks to clinch a spot in the MAC conference tournament in its final two games of the season this week. The team currently sits in sixth place in the MAC, and the seniors will look to extend their careers. Senior forward A’Jah Davis is one double-double away from breaking the school record. 

GYMNASTICS 

Saturday, March 4: vs Western Michigan University, 3 p.m.

Kalamazoo, MI. / University Arena

The NIU gymnastics will be on the road to face the Western Michigan University Broncos for their sixth Mid-American Conference meet. The Huskies are 3-2 in conference and have one more conference meet for the season after this one. The Broncos haven’t played as many games as the Huskies, but are currently undefeated at home and are 3-1 in their conference meets.

Saturday, March 4: vs. Western Kentucky University, 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.

NIU baseball will travel to Bowling Green, Kentucky to take on Western Kentucky University in a four-game weekend series. The first game of the series will be at 3 p.m. on Friday, Saturday will feature a double-header with games being played at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. The final game will be on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Friday, March 3: vs. University of South Carolina Upstate, 8 a.m.

Friday, March  3: vs. University of Rhode Island, 3:30 p.m.

NIU softball heads to Tampa this weekend to compete in the University of South Florida tournament. NIU will take on South Carolina Upstate Friday, who is undefeated through seven games. On the back half of the double header, NIU will play University of Rhode Island who holds a 1-4 record. On Saturday, the Huskies will play the 2-7 Army Black Knights and the 7-4 Kansas Jayhawks. NIU will wrap up the tournament Sunday against South Florida who sits at 4-8.
