Proper addition adds up to season-opening win for NIU

If at first you don’t succeed, check the addition. And it’s a good thing NIU swimming coach Jeanne Fleck did just that.

Her Huskie women swimmers left Green Bay Friday thinking they had just lost a season-opening dual meet with the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay by just one point (116-115).

Then on the bus ride home, the first-year boss noticed an error—an addition error: 12 plus 88 actually equals 100 instead of 90. Bottom line, the Huskies win the meet 125-116 after previously believing the final relay had decided the meet.

While UWGB’s Phoenix won that final relay as well as the opening 400-yard medley relay, NIU claimed blue ribbons in six of the nine individual swimming events, not to mention one-two finishes in both diving events.

“I was really pleased with our efforts. One key was that no one gave up at any time,” Fleck said. “It was a good start, but we also know we have a lot of work and a lot of learning to do from here on.”
