DeKALB – On March 19, Carl Austin, a 33-year-old DeKalb man, was pronounced dead after experiencing fatal gunshot wounds in the parking lot of University Village.

Police found Austin unresponsive after responding to a report of a male victim who had been shot near 847 Russell Road.

After being transported to Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital by DeKalb Fire Department, Austin died moments after arriving at the hospital.

Witnesses informed the DeKalb Police Department of a description of the offender, leading them to comprise a door-to-door investigation. 

The description led police to a subject fitting the details of the offender, 20-year-old male, Romel A. Hollingsworth from DeKalb. 

Hollingsworth is currently under investigation for first degree murder. Further charges may be filed later and all persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
