The Committee for the Improvement of Undergraduate Education is accepting nominations for an undergraduate teacher award.

The awards for excellence in undergraduate teaching are given to three NIU teachers. The nominee must be a full-time faculty member who has spent at least three academic years teaching at least one undergraduate course.

Anyone may submit nominations to the appropriate nominee’s department. The department will review each nomination and forward it to the student advisory committee and a departmental nominee will be selected.

Each college is limited to the number of nominees it may have. A total of 17 nominees will be voted on, and three finalists will be selected. The deadline for nominations to be submitted to the departmental chair or the Student Advisory Committee is Jan. 27, 1992.

Nominees should demonstrate an excellence in teaching and create an interest and appreciation of the subject matter.

Paul Bauer, chairman of the CIUE, said that not all colleges are currently represented in the CIUE. The colleges of education, engineering and engineering technology, visual and performing arts and a second representative for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences are missing representation.

Bauer said student representatives are selected by the Student Advisory Committee for each college.

The three finalists will be honored at the University Honors Banquet at the end of next semester and each will receive a one-time award of $1,500.

“Most often, the people who are chosen have been nominated two or three times before,” Bauer said.

“All nominees are excellent teachers. It’s very difficult to select three finalists.”
