Women’s tennis splits Friday showdown

DeKALB – NIU women’s tennis rallied with a 6-1 win over the University of St. Francis (USF) after a shutout loss to the University of Toledo Friday morning. The Huskies dominated in the doubles against USF in the second match Friday, improving to 11-9 on the season and are 1-1 in Mid-American Conference play.

FIRST MATCHES AGAINST TOLEDO

In the first match of the day against Toledo, the Huskies got shut out with a match score of 7-0. Toledo is ranked No. 69 in the country and is now 11-3 on the season.

The Rockets started off the day dominating the singles against NIU. Five out of the six singles were straight set wins. NIU sophomore Angelica Ross took Toledo freshman Sanjana Tallamraju’s second set in the game but lost 10-5 in a super tiebreaker.

The Huskies dropped two out of three doubles matches. Tallmraju and junior Julia Kuszynski led the Rockets to a 6-3 win over NIU junior Diana Lukyanova and sophomore Reagan Welch. In the No. 3 position, Toledo senior Laura Morera and junior Cassie Alcala finished the doubles with a win over NIU freshman Isabella Righi and Ross.

SECOND MATCHES AGAINST ST. FRANCIS

Lukyanova and freshman Nataly Ninova teamed up to start the doubles against USF. The duo defeated USF senior Denisse Lizano and sophomore Gabriella Noa with a 6-3 win.

Continuing the rally, the Huskies’ next doubles win resulted in a 6-0 shutout by NIU freshmen McKenna Chudy and Jenna Horne.

To end the day with a doubles sweep, Huskie junior Josefina Trella and Ross defeated their USF opponents freshman Julia Lara Fleige and graduate student Grace Monahan.

The Huskies continue MAC play at 1 p.m. Sunday against the University at Buffalo Bulls at the Nelson Center in the Chick Evans Field House. Live stats will be available via iOnCourt.
