Ly, Romancew lead Huskies to fourth at Pinetree Collegiate

DeKALB – Junior Jasmine Ly’s top five finish helped NIU women’s golf earn a fourth-place finish at the Pinetree Collegiate Monday and Tuesday. 

The Huskies finished the two-day event in fourth place with a final score of 17-over par, 881. NIU finished three strokes behind Kennesaw State University, who scored 14-over par, 878. The Huskies finished 12 strokes ahead of Stetson University, who scored 29-over par, 893. 

Ly earned a fifth-place finish in the field of 66 golfers, tying with the University of Incarnate Word’s sophomore Lily Hirst. Ly’s first round score was two-over par, second round was three-under par and her final round score was two-under par. 

The Windsor, Ontario native’s final score was three-under par, 213. Ly finished her three rounds with nine total birdies. 

Junior Emily Romancew was the second-best finisher for the Huskies, tying for 11th place with Stetson University’s junior Lisa Colee with a score of four-over par, 220.

Romancew’s first round score was one-under par, her second round score was two-over par, and she finished the third round at three-over par. Romancew finished with a total of nine birdies. 

Graduate student Sydney Naro was the third Huskie to finish in the top 15, earning a 14th place finish – tied with Incarnate Word’s senior Ellen Nicholas and University of Delaware’s sophomore Lilia Henkel. 

Naro finished with a score of six-over par, 222, with her first round score at one-under par, her second round at one-over par and her final round at six-over par. Naro’s rough final round score caused her to fall seven spots. 

Junior Karen Liu and senior Ahra Ko rounded out the Huskies’ top five as both golfers tied for 32nd place with scores of 15-over par, 231. The two golfers tied with High Points University sophomore Ana-Elena Kusters, University of South Dakota junior Danica Badura and Tennessee Tech freshman Kaydi Rhodes.

“We’re really excited. Obviously, we want to see improvements week after week, and we are,” NIU head coach Kim Kester said via an NIU Athletics press release. “This is the right time to start to see improvements as we head to the MAC Championship in a few weeks, I’m very pleased with how we played.”
