DeKALB – Around 2 p.m. Friday, a structure fire took place at 1024 W. Hillcrest Drive, a vacant building that was in the process of being renovated.
There was one worker in the building when the fire started, but they got out of the building safely.
By 2:20 p.m. the fire was put out, but the road is still obstructed as the Fire Department is still securing the building and putting out hot spots and residual smoke.
“It sounds like it was an accidental cause, but that’s very early to say,” said DeKalb Fire Chief Mike Thomas. “We’re just doing our operation to make sure that we leave the building safe which requires a lot of overhaul. The fire has been put out. There’s a lot of residual smoke and hot spots.”
The extent of the damages is unknown at this time.
