Women’s tennis, football highlight week in NIU sports

Football looks to rebound in Toledo; women’s tennis begins season

This Week in Huskie Sports: Sept. 25 to Oct. 1

DeKALB – Athletics begins another week of sports, highlighted by women’s tennis’ season opener and football’s trip to Toledo.

FOOTBALL

Saturday, Sept. 30: vs. University of Toledo, 2:30 p.m.

Toledo, Ohio / Glass Bowl Stadium

NIU football (1-3) begins conference play on Saturday against the University of Toledo Rockets (3-1). NIU comes into MAC play struggling, dropping its last three games. Toledo is hitting its stride, winning its last three games after losing Week 1. The Huskies will look to grab their second road win of the 2023 season.

CROSS COUNTRY 

Friday, Sept. 29: Notre Dame Invite 

South Bend, Indiana

NIU cross country will travel to South Bend, Indiana, on Friday to compete in the Notre Dame Invite. NIU enters South Bend after placing ninth out of 10 teams at the Mel Brodt Collegiate Open.

NIU volleyball (3-11, 1-1 MAC) returns home after spending the past 11 matches on the road. The Huskies will host the Miami University RedHawks (4-10, 0-2 MAC) on Friday and Saturday for their conference home opener. NIU split its recent series against Bowling Green State University on the road to open MAC play. Friday’s match will be the Huskies’ first time playing in Victor E. Court this season after playing their first three home contests in the NIU Convocation Center’s main arena.

MEN’S GOLF 

Sunday, Oct. 1 – Tuesday, Oct. 3: at University of Wisconsin-Madison

NIU men’s golf heads to Madison, Wisconsin, to compete in the Badger Invitational for the second consecutive year. The Huskies are coming off a tie for sixth place finish at the VCU Shootout after junior Ben Sluzas and graduate student Zach Place finished within the top-10. The tournament is a multi-day event ranging from Oct. 1 through Oct. 3. 

WOMEN’S GOLF

Monday, Sept. 25 – Wednesday, Sept. 27 Johnie Imes Invitational 

Columbia, Missouri / The Club at Old Hawthorne

NIU women’s golf will look to improve upon its 12th place finish at the Mary Fossum Invitational this week at the Johnie Imes Invitational. Seniors Jasmine Ly and Emily Romancew will lead the Huskies after they both posted rounds under par at the Mary Fossum Invitational.

MEN’S SOCCER

Tuesday, Sept. 26: vs Loyola University Chicago, 7pm

Following its fourth straight loss of the season, NIU men’s soccer takes on Loyola University Chicago in DeKalb, IL. This game will take place at the NIU Soccer and Track & Field Complex.

Following a loss to Western Michigan University, the NIU women’s soccer team will play against Ohio University at noon Thursday at home. The Huskies will face the University of Akron Zips in a road matchup against at noon Sunday.

NIU hockey hits the road for the second straight week to take on Western Michigan University. NIU is in search of its first win of the season after being swept by Kent State University and the University of Illinois in the first two weekend series of the season. The Huskies will look to solve their power play issues. The team has yet to score a power play goal through the first four games.

This week the NIU women’s tennis team will start off their season competing at the Indiana Hoosier Invitational and the Western Michigan Invitational. The Huskies will be splitting up to compete in two different tournaments in the same weekend.
