BOR to discuss bylaws

Changing bylaws will be among the main topics of discussion at this week’s Board of Regents meeting.

The Regents will convene at Illinois State University in Normal for committee meetings Wednesday and a regular meeting Thursday. The Regents govern NIU, ISU and Sangamon State University in Springfield.

The Personnel and Operations committee will meet Wednesday to discuss a change in Regents’ bylaws.

The discussion, which is the only item on the committee’s agenda, was prompted by a request at last month’s meeting from committee chairperson Carol Burns.

Regents Chancellor Roderick Groves’ report states Board operating procedures, meetings, officers and committee assignments are among the possible areas of discussion.

The Finance and Facilities Committee, which is chaired by Carl Kasten will have a shortened meeting on Wednesday, said Groves’ assistant Cheryl Peck.

Peck said the committee will talk about the housing situation at SSU, a tax-sheltered annuity plan, and hear a presentation on the proposed ISU Performing Arts Center.

She said the presentation will be made by Alvin Goldfarb, the ISU dean of Fine Arts. ISU President Thomas Wallace had requested the presentation at last month’s meeting.

The Academic and Student Affairs Committee will not meet this month. “Committee meetings are held only when there’s something to talk about,” Peck said.

The regular portion of the Regents meeting will take place Thursday. Peck said one major topic the Regents will discuss is a semiannual report on personnel transactions within the system.

The report shows the number of newly-appointed full-time faculty and staff declined between February and August at all three Regency universities.

Other items on the agenda include a legislative report from Regents legislative liaison Phil Adams and a fall enrollment report.
