The “Eras Tour” doesn’t seem to be going out of style anytime soon as the sold out tour takes its friendship bracelets to theaters.
“Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” premiered Oct. 13 exclusively in theaters to give fans a concert-like experience.
Taylor Swift is breaking box-office records with the release of her concert documentary covering her successful “Eras Tour.” The movie presales obliterated movie franchises like Marvel and is the highest grossing tour and most profitable concert film ever.
On its Friday the 13th release weekend, the film raked in $128 million in domestic and international ticket sales. The movie is now No. 1 around the world and has broken AMC’s ticketing revenue record after the film was announced through a post on Swift’s Instagram.
The Eras Tour film is a compilation of over 10 years of Swift’s work. She created the idea of the Eras Tour in an effort to re-record and re-release all of her projects after having her masters sold from under her by her ex-recording label.
On arrival, Swifties were greeted at the theaters with Eras Tour merch, and with the purchase of a ticket, every fan received a card of the film’s poster. Merch consisted of memorabilia cups, popcorn buckets and tote bags with light up batons all ranging from $10 to $20. Swifties were spotted arriving in “senior jewels” costumes and their coveted Eras Tour blue crewnecks for the 2 hour and 48 minute showing, ready to trade friendship bracelets with AMC staff.
Swifties were not sure what to expect with the concert documentary as there was little to no promotion for the film’s release. As the film started, the singer’s clamshell of vibrant colorful fabric opened to reveal the pop royalty. The film showcased every “Era” from the original setlist of the sold out Eras Tour. The “Eras” featured were “Lover,” “Fearless,” “Evermore,” “Speak Now,” “Folklore,” “Reputation,” “Red” and “1989,” with surprise songs from her self-titled debut album.
Prior to the premiere, AMC said fans would be allowed to treat the theater as a “concert-like experience” so long as the viewing pleasures of others are not ruined. Swifties took full advantage of the opportunity as they sprung up from their seats to cheer, dance and sing for the one they call mother.
The fan favorite era is “Reputation” as the era’s snake special effects made the already larger than life performance even more captivating.
The purpose of the film was to give fans who could not get tickets a chance to experience the concert as well.
This meant the film did not cover any behind the scenes footage of the production of the biggest tour in the world. This left Swifties to speculate that there will be another documentary released to show the production side of the mega tour.
As a superfan, it was nice to relive the night of the concert as it is hard to remember the actual show due to adrenaline. I brought my friends who are not fans, but were interested in attending the tour itself.
While fellow Swifties will enjoy the almost three hours of festivities, those who are not, are in for a long night. The film is a joy to see if you are just interested in viewing the concert itself. However, Swift’s lack of personalized content for the film in general made me question the timing and overall release of the film.
While making the concert accessible to fans who could not afford tickets marked at upwards of thousands of dollars to see Swift, it felt a little gimmicky for the mega star. It was apparent the film was directed at hard-core stans of the songstress. The lack of plot and purpose made it a harder watch if you are not into Swift’s music.
Overall, “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” can fully be considered a concert rather than a movie, and that is thanks to Swifties. The magic of the “Eras Tour” was created by Swifties in preparation of Swift’s first tour since “Reputation” in 2018. Swifties conjured up the scheme behind the costumes, friendship bracelets and even the tour itself. Taylor often states during the tour that the fans are the reason the “Eras Tour” is successful, as the Swifties created the spectacle.
Don’t worry, this isn’t the last time to see the “Eras Tour.” Swift’s concert film is in theaters for 12 more weeks. She is also going international with her tour for most of 2024 before coming back home to America for a final North American leg.
