Winter sports begin this week in Huskie sports

DeKALB – NIU Athletics begins another October week of events, headlined by men’s and women’s basketball’s Huskie Madness event and wrestling’s Red/Black Dual.

MEN’S AND WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Thursday, Oct. 26: Huskie Madness, 7 p.m.

DeKalb / Convocation Center

NIU men’s and women’s basketball begin their 2023-2024 campaign with their annual Huskie Madness introduction event. Both teams will participate in a three-point contest, dribbling skills contest, slam dunk contest and team introductions. Both men’s and women’s basketball teams made appearances in the MAC Tournament during the 2022-2023 season.

WRESTLING 

Friday, Oct. 27: Red/Black Dual, 7 p.m.

DeKalb / Victor E. Court 

NIU wrestling kicks off the 2023-2024 season with the annual Red/Black dual at Victor E. Court. Last year, the Huskies finished 8-5 overall and ended the season with an eighth-place team finish at the MAC championship.

NIU’s volleyball squad (8-15, 6-5 MAC) plays host to two MAC rivals this weekend as Akron (10-12, 5-6 MAC) and Buffalo (19-4, 9-2 MAC) visit Victor E. Court for their lone meetings with NIU. The Huskies look to change their luck after going winless in their Michigan road trip last week.

Friday, Oct. 27: at University of Illinois Chicago, 7 p.m.

Following a loss against Western Michigan University and a win against Belmont University at home, the NIU men’s soccer team is back on the road this Friday at the University of Illinois Chicago. 

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Thursday, Oct. 26: at Bowling Green State University, 2 p.m. 

Bowling Green, Ohio / Cochrane Soccer Stadium

After a 1-0 win against Central Michigan University, the NIU women’s soccer team will take on the Bowling Green Falcons at 2 p.m. on Thursday at Cochrane Stadium in Bowling Green, Ohio. 

HOCKEY

Friday, Oct. 27: vs. Midland University, 7:30 p.m.

The NIU Hockey team returns home still in search of its first win after dropping its series with Waldorf University last weekend. The Huskies take on Midland, who defeated the Huskies 7-6 on Oct. 6 and 6-1 on Oct. 7. NIU will see the full return of freshman forward Walker Smith this weekend, who posted 129 points in 107 junior hockey games over the last two seasons. 

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Friday, Oct. 27 – Sunday, Oct. 29: at NIU Huskie Fall Invitational  

DeKalb / Nelson Tennis Center at Chick Evans Field House

After winning 2 out of its 3 doubles matches and 3 out of 5 of its singles matches at the ITA Regional, the NIU women’s tennis team will play its first home tournament of the year Friday to Sunday at the Nelson Tennis Center at Chick Evans Field House. 

CROSS COUNTRY  

Saturday, Oct. 28: at MAC Championship, 11 a.m. 

Bowling Green, Ohio / Mel Brodt Cross Country Course

NIU cross country will travel to Bowling Green State University to compete in the MAC championship. The Huskies enter post-season play after nabbing 5th place at the Bradley Pink classic on Oct. 13, their second best team performance of the season.
