DeKALB – A career shooting day against Ball State University for freshman forward Tyra King cemented her status as this week’s Huskie of the Week.
King recorded five total shots and four shots on goal to lead NIU women’s soccer to a 1-0 victory over the Cardinals. Both stats were career-highs.
The Naperville native was also responsible for the only goal of the game. King’s scoring play came in the 90th minute of the contest with 45 seconds remaining, a goal that sent the NIU Soccer and Track & Field Complex into pandemonium.
With the win, the Huskies ended Ball State’s eight-game unbeaten streak and handed the Cardinals their first conference loss of the 2023 season.
NIU won its next match against Central Michigan University on Sunday and clinched a berth in the MAC Tournament. The victory also capped off the Huskies’ second three-game win streak of the year. King did not play in Sunday’s match.
NIU will face Bowling Green State University next at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Cochrane Soccer Stadium in Bowling Green, Ohio.
Next week’s Huskie of the Week will be announced on Oct. 30.
The Northern Star sports section’s Huskie of the Week is voted for on a weekly basis. Student-athletes considered for this week’s edition were chosen based on their weekly performance in competitions taking place from Oct. 16 to Oct. 22.
