DeKALB – NIU football (4-4, 3-1 MAC) carries a three-game winning streak into Week 1 of MACtion against Central Michigan University (4-4, 2-2 MAC).
LAST SEASONS MATCHUP
In their last matchup, CMU topped the Huskies in a double digits scoring fashion on Nov. 2, to move away by a final score of 35-22.
While allowing just a single penalty and producing triple-digit rushing yards, NIU coughed up a couple of turnovers. The Huskies got burnt on defense as well, allowing four total touchdowns and 451 yards of total offense.
The Chippewas weren’t particularly world-beaters last season, but they certainly stuck it to the Huskies. CMU although, won’t be so fortunate this season with impending issues on the horizon and a revamped NIU roster.
As both teams currently maintain a .500 record, vying for MAC and Bowl contention, I have a strong belief that the Huskies will extend their winning streak to four games. Here’s my reasoning.
CHIPPEWAS STRUGGLES
This season, CMU’s offense produces just a hair over 20 points per game. Their biggest weakness has been their defense, which has given up close to 29.8 points per game, according to sports-reference. The Chippewas have allowed 30 points or more in five of their first eight games of the season.
REVAMPED HUSKIES TEAM
While CMU effectively moved the ball on offense in their last matchup, they have an uphill battle against an NIU defense with a redefined identity. Rising to national prominence, the Huskies’ defense has dominated the turnover battle with five interceptions over the last two games.
While inconsistent, the Huskies’ offense has shown signs of life since their closely contested 33-35 loss over the University of Toledo on Sept. 30. After failing to score over 15 points in three of their first four games, NIU has posted 20 or more points in the last four games.
If redshirt senior quarterback Rocky Lombardi remains serviceable, I anticipate a 25-13 drubbing over the Chippewas. With a reinvigorated defense and the pendulum swinging in the Huskies’ favor, l firmly believe the Huskies can win out and clinch a Bowl game.
The Huskies hit the road for a showdown against CMU at 6 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Kramer/Deromedi Field at Kelly/Shorts Stadium. Live stats will be available via SideArm Stats, and the game will be televised on ESPN2.
