Midweek MACtion headlines week in Huskie sports

DeKALB – NIU football hits the road for its first midweek MACtion of the season, while volleyball fights for the final spot in the MAC tournament in a jam-packed week of NIU sports.

FOOTBALL

Tuesday, Oct. 31: at Central Michigan University, 6 p.m.

Mount Pleasant, Michigan / Kelly/Shorts Stadium

NIU football (4-4, 3-1 MAC) travels to Mount Pleasant, Michigan, to take on the Central Michigan University Chippewas (4-4, 2-2 MAC) Tuesday. NIU currently sits in second place in the MAC West Division, while Central Michigan is in third, just a game behind the Huskies. The Huskies are riding a three game win streak heading into midweek MACtion but will have their work cut out for them against the Chippewas, who are undefeated at home this season. 

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Wednesday, Nov. 1: vs. Illinois Wesleyan University, 7 p.m.

DeKalb / Convocation Center

NIU men’s basketball opens up its 2023-2024 season Wednesday with a home exhibition match against the Illinois Wesleyan University Titans. The Huskies are coming off a 13-19 overall record and a 9-9 conference record in 2022-2023. NIU is returning four starters from last year’s team, which played in the MAC tournament for the first time since 2019. Junior guard David Coit and senior guard Keshawn Williams were each named to preseason All-MAC teams and will look to lead the Huskies this season.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Saturday, Nov. 4: vs. Ripon College, 6 p.m.

DeKalb / Convocation Center

Women’s basketball begins its 2023-2024 season with a home exhibition game against the Ripon College Red Hawks Saturday. The Huskies finished with a 16-17 record last season with a 8-10 conference record, before being eliminated in the first round of the MAC Basketball Championship. Three starters will return for the 2023-2024 season, including fifth year guard Chelby Koker as the leading scoring among returning players.

MEN’S TENNIS

Friday, Nov. 3 – Sunday, Nov. 5: MAC Indoor Championships

Kalamazoo, Michigan / Sorenson Tennis Courts

NIU men’s tennis looks to put up another solid outing in its final tournament of the fall season, the MAC Indoor Championships. Sophomore Christopher Norlin looks to improve upon a four-win outing at the ITA Regional Championships.

WRESTLING 

Friday, Nov. 3: vs. Huskie Duals, 3 p.m.

DeKalb / Victor E. Court 

With the annual Red/Black scrimmage in the rearview mirror, NIU will host Lindenwood University and St. Ambrose University in the first dual of the season. 

VOLLEYBALL

Friday, Nov. 3: vs. University of Toledo, 6 p.m.

The NIU volleyball team (8-17, 6-7 MAC) finishes its four-match homestand Friday and Saturday. The University of Toledo (10-14, 8-5 MAC), head coach Sondra Parys’ alma mater, are set to pay a visit to DeKalb for a two-match series. The Huskies will attempt to nix their ongoing five-game losing skid and climb back up to the No. 6 spot in the MAC standings.

Wednesday, Nov. 1: vs Bowling Green State University, 7 p.m.

DeKalb / NIU Soccer and Track & Field Complex

After a shutout loss against University of Illinois Chicago, NIU men’s soccer finishes its regular season Wednesday at home against Bowling Green State University.
