NIU’s Wind Ensemble and Wind Symphony will be performing a brand new composition, “Gale and Zephyr” by composer Shawn E. Okpebholo. The performance will take place at 7 p.m. on Nov 28 in the School of Music’s Boutell Memorial Concert Hall.
According to Okpebholo’s website, he has won a number awards: The Academy of Arts and Letters Walter Hinrichsen Award (2022), winner of the 2020 American Prize in Composition (professional/wind band division), and the Inaugural Awardee of the Leslie Adams-Robert Owens Composition Award.
Okpebholo came to campus on Oct. 26 to watch the rehearsal of the show, according to a press release. He will also return to campus to watch the concert.
Okpebholo has a master’s and doctoral degrees in composition which he received from the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati.
Tickets are free for NIU students, $10 for the general public, $5 for non-NIU students, staff members and seniors. Tickets must be purchased online ahead of the performance.
