Huskies second in Big Ten battle

The Big Ten powerhouses proved not to be so mighty in this weekend’s Lady Northern Intercollegiate golf championship.

Nine of the schools in the conference were beaten by the NIU women’s golf team in the tournament usually referred to as the Regional Championship for the Big Ten. Only the University of Minnesota Gophers were good enough to beat NIU.

The Huskies shot team totals of 302 on Friday, 315 on Saturday, and 307 on Sunday for a weekend tally of 924 and second-place honors. Minnesota turned in a score of 919.

“We weren’t happy with the 315 on the second day,” coach Pam Tyska said. “But being behind and knowing we had to catch up helped a little. We knew every stroke had to count and came back with a decent score on Sunday.”

Senior Nicole Jeray took medalist’s honors with a three day total of 219. She trailed by four strokes going into Sunday’s round, but shot a tournament low of 70 to capture her third medal of the season.

NIU’s second-place finish marks its first defeat of the season. The Huskies had won the Illinois State, Iowa State and Michigan State University Invitationals.
