DeKALB – NIU men’s and women’s basketball begin their 2023-2024 regular seasons this week in Huskie sports.
FOOTBALL

NIU football (4-5, 3-2 MAC) returns home to take on the Ball State University Cardinals (2-7, 1-4 MAC) Tuesday. Entering their final three games, the Huskies must win at least two to be bowl game eligible and extend their season. NIU is currently in third place in the MAC West Division after seeing its three game winning streak snapped by Central Michigan on Tuesday. Ball State is in last place in the MAC West division.

Coming off an 81-64 victory Wednesday in an exhibition match against Illinois Wesleyan University, NIU basketball travels on Monday to Milwaukee to take on the No. 5 ranked Marquette University Golden Eagles in its first official regular season game. The Huskies’ home opener will be Saturday against the Appalachian State University Mountaineers.

Women’s basketball opens the 2023-2024 regular season on the road, facing off against the Arkansas State University Red Wolves. The Huskies finished last regular season 16-17 (8-10 MAC) and the Red Wolves finished 13-19 (6-12 SBC). The Huskies are led by fifth year guard Chelby Koker and senior guard Jayden Marable.

Fresh off a bye weekend, NIU Hockey travels downstate to take on rival Illinois State University still in search of its first win of the season. The status of head coach Brad Stoffers remains in question after Stoffers left prior to the game on Oct. 27 and was absent on Oct. 28.

NIU cross country will travel to Oklahoma for the NCAA Midwest Regional after placing 11th at the MAC Championships Oct. 28. Graduate student runner Emma Planck and senior Julia Finegan placed and set new PRs at the MAC Championships.
