DeKALB – Horse enthusiasts and those looking for a local activity will have the opportunity to learn more about the history of horses at the Glidden Homestead. Attendees can enjoy a warm meal while becoming more versed in DeKalb horse history.
The History of the Morgan Horse will be held from 12 p.m. to 4. p.m. Feb. 4 at the Glidden Homestead located at 921 W. Lincoln Highway. Admission is $5 per person and free for Homestead members.
A bowl of soup and a house tour are included in the program which will be led by Judie Wright, a horse breeder who has worked at her farm, Bellmara Stables, since the 1970’s.
The program will be centered around Percheron horses, which were bred at Glidden Homestead, and Morgan horses, the first breed developed in America.
Joseph Glidden played a crucial part in the use of Percheron horses on farms in the region and initiated its use on farms, according to the Glidden Homestead press release.
“He bred and raised the horses in the 1870 brick barn at the Glidden Homestead,” according to the press release.
The event is a part of the Soup-er Sunday program hosted by the Glidden Homestead. The Soup-er Sunday program takes place on the third Sunday of January, February and March.
