NIU tastes rare defeat

Something unusual happened last night. Something that has only happened once this season.

The Huskie volleyball team lost in an exciting match that went down to the wire (12-15, 15-3, 15-7, 11-15, 13-15). The University of Wisconsin-Madison Badgers were the culprits, dropping NIU’s record to 9-2 on the season.

“We were playing against one of the best teams in the country,” NIU head coach Pete Waite said. “We were excited about the match, but also somewhat nervous.”

After losing the first game, NIU rallied back to take the next two. The Huskies appeared to be in command of game four before Badger setter, Liz Tortorello, stepped to the line for seven consecutive points and the win.

“Once we realize that we can play with a team we go right at them,” Waite said. “We’re now recognized as one of the top teams in the country and we sure pushed Wisconsin to the limit.”

NIU’s attack was led by junior Wendy Mason’s 16 kills. Outside hitter, Nikki Kozak, added 14 followed by teammate Amy Foulke’s 13. Kozak led the team in digs with 16 saves.

“We anticipated a tough match, but nothing like this,” Wisconsin coach Margie Fitzpatrick said. “NIU’s offense was incredible and we really had to rely on our blocking.” Senior Jeanette Simenson recorded seven blocks for the Badgers.

With a win last night, the Huskies could have broken a school record for best start ever. With the loss, NIU tied the mark set in 1972. NIU takes its record on the road this weekend where it will participate in the University of Michigan Tournament.
