NIU men’s tennis senior Mikael Vollbach was named the MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday.
MAC faculty athletics representatives consider athletic performance from the previous week and grade-point average when selecting the athletes who will receive the honor. It is presented twice weekly, to one male athlete and one female athlete.
Vollbach clinched the victory for the Huskies in their 4-1 win against the University of Nebraska Omaha, after 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) singles sets against sophomore Ryoma Mishiro. He also won his doubles match alongside senior Cheng En Tsai. Earlier that same day, Vollbach secured a 6-0, 6-2 victory in singles against Southern University, where the Huskies swept 7-0.
Vollbach holds a perfect 4.0 grade point average and is majoring in business administration. He joins redshirt sophomore wrestler Blake West and redshirt sophomore wide receiver/punt returner Dane Pardridge as the third Huskie to earn the honor this academic year.
NIU men’s tennis looks to add to their eight-match winning streak at noon Friday at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center where they face their first conference opponent in Ball State University.
