After conquering the NIU career stolen bases record, senior infielder Caitlyn Shumaker has earned NIU softball’s first Huskie of the Week honor of the season.
Shumaker’s 61 steals surpasses Jill Carpenter, who set the record in 2000.
The Bellefontaine, Ohio, native went 6-for-10 with 5 runs scored in four games at home, helping the Huskies obtain their first series win of the season against Kent State University.
Shumaker is batting .306 on the year with 16 runs and 14 stolen bases.
The Huskies return to action at noon CT Saturday in Athens, Ohio, for the first game of a doubleheader with Ohio University.
Next week’s Huskie of the Week will be announced April 8.
The Northern Star sports section’s Huskie of the Week is voted for on a weekly basis. Student-athletes considered for this week’s edition were chosen based on their weekly performance in competitions taking place from March 25 to March 31.
