SAMTB in confusion over director position
April 2, 1991
The NIU bus board is in a state of confusion over who is going to be their next leader for the Late Nite Ride Service.
After supposedly giving the job of next year’s LNRS director to Sharat Shenoy last week in a meeting closed to the public, the Student Association Mass Transit Board changed their mind when voting publicly this week.
The vote came up after board member Henry Treftz said the vote during the closed meeting last week might be illegal. He said a public vote would avoid controversy.
However, the board put themselves into controversy when several board members changed their minds and decided in a 7-3 vote not to give Shenoy the job.
SAMTB Executive Director Todd Allen said he believed the vote last week in favor of Shenoy was 6-4, but official records were not kept.
Allen also was not sure who changed their votes, and was upset because of the confusion, he said.
“The board is very hypocritical in their voting and very lacking in professionalism,” Allen said.
Another problem with last week’s vote was the board’s rush to adjourn the meeting without giving Shenoy or Dave Forster, the losing applicant, a chance to hear the board’s reasoning, Allen said.
Allen has recently been showing frustration with his board members’ decisions and his inabilility to have an official say in their votes.
Because of the mix-up, the board will have to start the interview process over again, he said.
Shenoy, who was not at the meeting, was astonished by the board’s decision, but would not offer further comment.
Forster could not be reached for comment.
Shenoy is the current director of the service that gives NIU students late night rides on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m.
