Speech to focus on media

As part of National Hispanic Month, the assistant editor of the Chicago Tribune, an NIU graduate, will speak about stereotypes in the media Monday.
Assistant Editor Manuel Galvan will give a speech titled “Stereotypes: How the Media Views Hispanics,” in the Holmes Student Center’s Heritage Room from 4 to 6 p.m. His appearance is being sponsored by the NIU’s Department of Journalism and The Northern Star.
“It’s good for everyone, including Hispanics, to see a role model that they can identify with,” said Yolanda Trevino, student programming coordinator for University Resources for Latinos.
Galvan has worked at the Chicago Tribune for 11 years. He is a member of the Tribune’s editorial board and specializes in politics and government stories.
In addition to writing, he currently teaches journalism at Northwestern University, Evanston and Columbia College in Chicago.
Trevino said one of the purposes of National Hispanic Month is to give people the chance to be able to identify with a certain role model, encouraging them to try their best.
“Interested journalism majors, for example, will not see Galvan as a Hispanic, but rather as a person who did well in his respective field,” Trevino said.
