Regents’ policy successful once again
April 5, 1991
A Board of Regents personnel transaction policy has proved itself successful again this year.
Regents Chancellor Roderick Groves’ March report states that out of 1,036 personnel transactions at the three Regency schools from September 1990 to February 1991, only 51 required Regents’ approval.
Before the Regents enacted the plan in May 1988, all of the 1,036 changes would have required Regents’ approval.
Groves’ report stated the new policy showed “dramatic evidence of the scope of delegation that has taken place in the Regency system in recent years.” The change also cut down the time of Regency meetings.
Although the Regency system consists of three schools—NIU, Illinois State University in Normal and Sangamon State University in Springfield, NIU accounted for 26 of the 51 transaction approvals.
Eighteen of the NIU transactions were changes in job title or salary, including the promotion of Nancy Vedral to Acting Dean of the College of Continuing Education.
Seven of the NIU transaction approvals were changes in sabbaticals or paid leaves.
The remaining NIU transaction approval was the promotion of George Henry from instructor to assistant professor in the computer science department.
The report also stated NIU had an increase in the number of temporary faculty hired from 217 during the 1989-90 year to 255 this school year, while the number of temporary administrative positions stayed about the same.
The report also stated NIU had 20 faculty separations during this school year, including the resignation of football coach Jerry Pettibone.
