IEPA to pick up waste

DeKalb residents will be saying good-bye and good-riddance to some hazardous waste this Saturday.

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has scheduled a household hazardous waste collection project for the DeKalb area. The DeKalb County Farm Bureau and League of Women Voters are cosponsoring the clean-up project.

They will be collecting hazardous household products from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the DeKalb County Highway Department, 2910 Barber-Green Road.

Some of the things they will be collecting are lawn pesticides, oil-base paint, anti-freeze, furniture polish and batteries without liquid acid in them.

The IEPA will not be collecting industrial waste, commercial waste, institutional waste, farm waste or explosives.

Mark Chandler, IEPA project manager, said once the hazardous products are collected they are separated and bulked together so that they can be distributed to various waste dumps.

Chandler said the paints and oils that are collected will be blended and burned for fuel. The rest will be neutralized and sealed in drums for hazardous waste landfills.

Chandler said DeKalb was chosen as a site after submitting an application to the IEPA about eight months ago.

“We try to pick locations that are geographically equal throughout the state,” he said.

Greg Milberg, government affairs director for the DeKalb County Farm Bureau, said the cosponsors of the project are responsible for publicizing the event and answering any questions the public has regarding which products will be accepted.

“I am hoping for a large turnout,” Milberg said. “Last year Rockford had over 750 participants.”

The IEPA picks up the cost of waste being collected, packaged, transported and disposed of by SET Environmental, the IEPA contractor for the project.

The IEPA has three more projects planned in May for Orland Park, Des Plaines and Morgan County.
