Message for all
April 16, 1991
I was appalled by Beth Behland’s insinuation that a “Christian” would advocate the cold-blooded killing of a homosexual.
There may be some Christians who have an inadequate understanding of God’s love and justice which would lead them to post such an offensive sign, but she should not assume these people were professing Christians.
I am also offended by her unprofessional use of prejudiced language and her insipid characterization of Christians. A good reporter checks out all the facts before forming an opinion.
Ms. Behland’s characterization of Christianity has been drawn solely from a biased media and the “fringe” elements of our faith.
I believe if she would make an attempt to get involved in a vibrant church, she might wish she had never penned those words.
The problem many have with Christianity is they think it is merely an opinion for us. Nothing is farther from the truth.
For us, it is life and truth, the truth of the forgiveness of sin by the shed blood of Christ, the perfect sacrifice; the historical reality of Christ’s resurrection from the dead; the numerous testimonies of those whose lives have been changed by the power of the Holy Spirit; the truth of God’s existence and his ongoing communication with his people through the Holy Spirit and through His holy word.
We are bold in proclaiming it not because we are holier-than-thou but because our message is for everyone. If we did not want you to be in heaven with us, we would stay cooped up in our little churches and rooms.
Prejudice works both ways. Those of you who have been slamming us from behind your pens need to get out and interact with us some more.
You might find it rewarding. I know I did when I got involved with a couple of panel discussions with GLU members (surprised?) and did some extensive research on homosexuality.
If you really are firm in your opinions about us, you have nothing to fear, right?
