Netters look for a sweep

A broom might be the weapon of choice for the NIU men’s tennis team at the Mid-Continent Tennis Tournament this weekend at Green Bay, Wis.

The Huskies, 16-8 overall and 6-0 in conference play, plan to sweep the Mid-Continent competition. The Huskies were able to handle the M-C easily in all their meets, but they were only able to shut out Valparaiso, Akron and Eastern Illinois.

“We’re going to go in there and try to sweep,” said Paul Gill, the No. 6 singles player who has a 9-5 record. “If we don’t concentrate, we might lose a set. But I think we’re all capable of coming back and winning three-setters.”

Erik Andersch, the team captain and No. 2 singles player who leads the team with a 25-7 record this year, does not care how much the winning margin is. “Winning is the only thing that matters,” he said.

Mats Persson takes his 23-10 mark to Green Bay at the No. 1 spot; Steve Senter has a 19-9 record at No. 3; Dustin Dobrin sits at 19-17 at No. 4 and David Settelmyer holds a 14-12 mark.

The Huskies are heavily favored, but second-year NIU coach Charles Merzbacher saw a Huskie charge last year against heavily favored Southwest Missouri State come up short.

“The Mid-Continent has very good depth,” he warned. “But, I don’t think we feel any pressure being the favorites. We just want to win.”
