DeKALB – At 11 a.m. Wednesday at MLK Commons, Food Truck Wednesdays, an NIU tradition, kicked off.
From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., as many as 12 different food trucks were available on Normal Road for students to purchase from. Many other activities, including games and music were offered by the Campus Activities Board.
Jennifer Groce, director of Community Engaged Partnerships, explained the expectations of the event and what fun activities are offered.
“So every week we’ve got a different menu of vendors anywhere, 10 to 12, every single week. So you should expect a variety of food trucks, plus you’ll see Campus Activities Board out here doing games and fun activities, music,” Groce said. “Sometimes we’ll have athletics out here and our mascot. Financial aid does provide some information, some things like that, some resources, but mostly what you can expect is a great vibe, awesome food and just what it’s like to truly be on a college campus, enjoying being a Huskie.”
People were able to meet Mission III, NIU’s huskie, near the CAB table.
Parth Chokshi, a senior sports management major, explained why he enjoys Food Truck Wednesdays.
“I’ve been coming out since when they started Food Truck Wednesdays. Since one of my friends is one of the main persons that runs it, and I’ve been coming every since, the food’s good and I like it a lot.”
Delilah Ipina, a first-year computer science major, said it was her first time attending Food Truck Wednesdays.
“I think it’s really nice. I’ve never seen some of these food trucks out here before so I think it’ll be interesting to try some new stuff,” Ipina said.
Some of the food trucks that were available this week were Kona Ice, a shaved ice truck with an array of flavors where people can mix and match flavors, Got Calzoni, an Italian truck with a specialty in calzones and Toasty Cheese, a truck that puts a spin on the classic grilled cheese.
